Mountain Peacock-pheasant Polyplectron inopinatum After a talk on Amur Falcon Conservation while representing Wildlife Conservation Society in Malaysia Vishnupriya and I took some time off and birded at multiple places in Peninsular Malaysia. Mountain Peacock-pheasant Polyplectron inopinatum Mountain Peacock Pheasant occurs throughout unlogged upper dipterocarp forests, lower montane and upper montane forests, from 820 m up to 2000 m. It is a near endemic of Peninsular Malaysia and is known only from 12 localities. James, Vishnupriya and myself spent a great time observing a pair with a chick at Genting Highlands of Malaysia. However the highlight of this sighting was the female teaching the technique of feeding to the young one. The female appeared quite patient and picked out individual mealworms from the ground and held each out till the chick pecked it. James also pointed out one more interesting thing. Female Mountain Peacock-pheasants have longer legs than males since the young chick quite literally feeds under the protective care of the female’s legs. I have attached images of male as well as female for the comparison.
