Movie #3: Evil Dead 3 (Army of Darkness). Sci-fi/Fantasy. After retconning the previous story (again), we find our hero Ash has been sent back in time to the 1300s. While he first treated as an enemy, the wise men realize he is the Promised One who will free them from the horror of the Deadites. But Ash just wants to get back to his own time. The only way to do that is to retrieve the Necronomicon. But when he does come back with the book, he didnt follow the safety measures the wise men told him about. So he has awakened an army of the dead who have kidnapped his sort of love interest and plan to kill everyone else. His only hope is to unite warring factions and stand against the Army of Darkness. This is a definite case of a movie trying too hard. One of great things about the first movie was that you were never sure if it was trying to be funny or serious. Even the second movie skirted that edge a bit, and at least had some amazing bits to get you through. Here, not so much. There isnt a shred of trying to be a serious horror movie in this one. The music-playing army of skeletons looks like something out of a Bugs Bunny cartoon, and is so silly I couldnt even respect the amazing animation skills that must have gone into it. The couple of scenes that had potential, the mini-Ashs and the bad Ash scenes, just dont quite live up to Ash battling his own hand in the last movie. And lets talk about our hero for a minute. Bruce Campbell is still as awesome and badass as ever. The problem here is the writing. They seem to have decided to turn Ash into a complete jerk. Hes just nasty to everyone from the moment he says his first word. He is even willing to abandon an entire world to the same evil hes been fighting for the last two movies just because he wants to get home. Its only when his love interest (who is was also a complete jerk to) gets taken that he agrees to fight. Why exactly anyone in this movie would follow him is beyond me. The final battle, which starts at about the one hour mark is pretty cool in a lot of ways, lots of stuff blowing up and such. Of course, theres also the fact that Ash started out essentially three days ago as the wimpy member of a group of campers and now somehow knows advanced battle tactics and major kung fu fighting moves. It just is so different from the other two movies, its hard to make work for me. To paraphrase Beauchamp from Tales of the City, It knows what it is now. Its lost its charm.
