Movie Matts Movie Reviews Pompeii (2014) It almost seems that you cant make a film about a tragic event in history without a love story. Off the top of my head, the best example that I can think of, is Titanic. While it is cheesy at times , the characters are likable and do have a genuine connection with each other. Then, on the other end of the spectrum, you have a disaster like Michael Bays Pearl Harbor. It looks like we have another film to join its club, Pompeii. As a young child, Milo (Kit Harington) saw the Roman Senator Corvus (Kiefer Sutherland) slaughter his people. Nearly two decades later Milo finds himself as a slave. One day, he encounters Cassia (Emily Browning), the daughter of Severus (Jared Harris) along the road and falls for her. Then, he is brought to Pompeii to fight in their arena as a gladiator. While there, he befriends Atticus (Adewale-Akinnuaye-Agbaje), a fellow slave, as they try to escape and gain their freedom. But all of this is happening, Mount Vesuvius is beginning to erupt and time is limited as everybody tries to escape with their lives. Oh Paul W.S. Anderson, when will you make a great movie? I enjoy the Resident Evil movies as a guilty pleasure, but this is terrible altogether. Honestly, when you think of Pompeii, do you think of an action-packed Gladiator rip-off? Maybe theres a reason for that, it should never be one. If there was any credit that Im going to give this movie, its the performance from Adewale. I thought that he gave a legit great performance. Too bad its in this movie. Kit Harington is great in Game of Thrones, but here, he has next to no personality or character. This can be said for the rest of the cast. The only exception is Kiefer Sutherland who plays it so over the top, its hysterical. Even the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius couldnt add flair to an all-around terrible movie. In closing, Pompeii has a few entertaining action sequences with one good performance, but that is where the praise ends. D+
