Movie Matts Movie Reviews The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) If there is one sub-genre that I dont mind seeing rebooted, is superhero movies. These characters have been around with us for as long as I can remember. There are still comic book publishers that put out brand new stories week after week with no intention of slowing down anytime soon. The same can be said for film franchises as well. There are so many stories to tackle in such little time. While this film may get its share of bashing, I believe that The Amazing Spider-Man is a fantastic re-imagining of one of the greatest superheroes of all time. With his parents out of the picture, the good-hearted Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield) is raised with his Aunt May (Sally Field) and Uncle Ben (Martin Sheen). Peters interests are photography, keeping to himself, and crushing on Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone). Peter thinks that he has his past all figured out, until he discovers his fathers secrets which lead him to his former partner Dr. Curtis Connors (Rhys Ifans). This visit eventually leads to his transformation as the masked vigilante, Spider-Man, as he now has to face off against Connors also known as the Lizard. Can Spidey save New York in time? Contrary to what others say, this is how you reboot a comic book franchise. I knew that they were on the right track when they announced the cast. Garfield is the perfect choice as Peter, as he is able to remain dorky yet likable and charming. He acts like the Spider-Man we all know and love. There is no denying that his chemistry with Emma Stone is perfect as she is a great fit for this role. Other cast members such as Ifans, Sheen, and Field are all outstanding and knock it out of the park. My main problems are what you call nitpicks such as some rushed scenes, Peter easily revealing his identity to people, and other small details here and there. But other than that, there isnt much else to say. In closing, The Amazing Spider-Man is charming, fun, and suspenseful with a perfect cast. A-
