Movie Review - The Babadook (Horror) The Best thing to come out of Australia since the ANZAC cookie, this debut film from Aussie director Jennifer Kent, will have squirming as you re-evaluate your relationship with your mother. A story of a widowed, single mother struggling to raise her son who is into street magic, and if that isn’t terrifying enough, there is also an evil spirit called the Babadook. A film which is reminiscent of old 70’s horror films, it does not rely on the jump scare. Instead, with the building tension and tone that will give you anxiety, this flick will have you gripped. The Babadook is a brothers Grimm style story book with a disconcerting art style that finds its way into the child’s bedroom for story time. Upon reading the book to her child, the mother finds fiction slowly becoming a reality as the spirit cast a presence over their home. From tingly moments of silence, a cripplingly sad relationship, and a threat of an ever present evil this one has to be watched in the dark. The acting is fantastic, especially from the young boy Noah Wiseman and as someone who has never liked a single Australian film (yes I even shudder when watching ‘The Castle’) The Babadook is a truly scary must see horror. Even more impressive is the fact this film was made with a budget under $3million, which came from government bodies and crowdfunding. I’m excited to see what Jennifer Kent does next and this film gets my tick of approval.
