Moving on up - UniSA ranks in world’s top 50 under 50 The University of South Australia has moved into the top 50 of the world’s Top 100 universities under 50 years old according to the Times Higher Education rankings released today. UniSA moved from moved up 13 places to rank 48. It is now also the youngest Australian institution to feature in the rankings. The Times Higher Education 100 under 50 provides a glimpse into the future, showcasing not those institutions with centuries of history, but the rising stars which show great potential. The table employs the same 13 separate indicators as the World University Rankings, but the methodology has been carefully re-calibrated to reflect the special characteristics of younger universities, giving less weight to subjective indicators of academic reputation. UniSA Vice Chancellor Professor David Lloyd says he is delighted with the results. “As an institution which is just 22 years old, to be placed in such an advanced position is a great achievement,” he says. “What is important here is that we are moving up and what’s clear is that much of our improvement relates to core university activities such as teaching and research and our strong relationships with industry. “There is often a lot of debate about the value of such rankings but we have to be clear – students do pay attention to rankings and it influences their study choices. “Rankings are an objective validation that we are delivering on our ambitions to continually improve the quality of our teaching and our research and to grow as an innovative global university.” The University improved the ranking for citations and was rated higher for both teaching and research.
