Mr. Wengi appears to be a thoughtful individual. And while its unfortunate the Woodfibre LNG proposal has become one of the more important issues - as we want councilors and a Mayor who also can think through many more upcoming matters - the LNG question can be seen as a litmus test for the candidates. Namely: have you been doing you homework on a issue that is one of the biggest our community - and communities across BC are facing? - Have you been reading the articles in the newspaper and attending the information meetings where specialists have been sharing their research on the topic? - Are you aware of who owns Woodfibre LNG? His own track record on the environment and charges of tax evasion? -Are you aware that the natural gas comes from fracking? Have you studied what that process is? - Do you understand the poisoning of the water? Methane leaking? Dumping millions of litres of heated, poisoned water into the ocean by the LNG facility? And on and on. - Almost forgot. Climate change. So then, the BIG QUESTION. HOW can this be a claim repeated over and over by some of the Squamish candidates? Exactly how can you consider all this information not sufficient to make an accurate and fully informed judgment on this project? (And where is the cautious pessimism about the EA assessment in the first place?) A possible conclusion: If you cant sort through the relatively straightforward information on the LNG proposal - and its consequences - how can the electorate expect a sophisticated and informed ability to deal with even more complex questions facing council? (Thats right. I said it. The LNG issue isnt so complex. Or difficult. Just like math, I dont have to be a Ph.D. in pure math to be able to do basic addition.) “If the plant was to go ahead I would do my utmost as councilor to ensure that the plant was built and held to the highest standard possible,” Wengi said.“However, until the EA process is finalised I don’t think anyone can make an accurate and fully informed judgment on this project.”
