Mrs. Edwards asked the question why is Roystonia is not a gated community such as the Crossings. Below is our response to the Mrs Edwards Mrs. Edwards thank you for you comment and interesting recommendation. There are two (2) points we would like to raise surrounding the reasons why Roystonia is not a gated community and why a lot of what was promised never materialized. 1. Roystonia is Private Public Partnership between the HDC and Hanover Construction 2. Politics The key difference between your example of the Crossings and Roystonia is that the Crossings is a private development which is not open to political interference. Their lands are not controlled by the HDC. The Crossings developers are driven by profits. The Roystonia development has never been a planned gated community given that the original development plans which originated from a development called Couva North Gardens. An excerpt from Wikipedia gives you scope of the development Exchange Lots (north of Southern Main Road and in the centre of the town); and Couva North Gardens and Roystonia (north of Southern Main Road and occupies the former Exchange Estate area). Phases 1-3 of the Couva North Housing Project (in Perseverance) was built by the Trinidad and Tobago Housing Development Corporation (HDC) and like Lisas Gardens is primarily Afro-Trinidadian. The HDC entered into a joint venture arrangement with the private sector to design, finance and construct Phases 4-6 of the Couva North Housing Project also known as Roystonia. Under this arrangement, the development of over 170Ha of land from Perseverance to the Southern Main Road, has been constructed and delivered in excess of 1,000 homes. Politics had a lot to do with the how this development progressed. Below is link on that shows some history and the dept of political interference that toke place. legacy.guardian.co.tt/archives/2004-05-13/news1.html newsday.co.tt/news/0,18172.html Roystonia has developed in such a way that it will be difficult to make it a gated community. In the past when we had regular community meetings it was raised. However there was never a consensus amongst the residents. Individuals had varying views for and against making the community gated. You would appreciate the scope of works required for such an undertaking given the amount of access roads to be closed, acquiring lands, permission from the authorities and permission from every single resident. Hanover Construction sold a dream to residents to buy into the development. We dare say though this dream which has not become a reality under Hanover Construction, we the residents can make our community a community that can be envied by our own will to make it so.
