Mrs Phua-Song Lilian, Mr Siew Yew Kong and Miss Lim Siew Liam are pioneer teachers of Bendemeer Secondary School. Ms Mabel Kam, a student of these pioneer teachers, is now herself a Humanities teacher at her alma mater. Two generations of teachers came together when Ms Mabel Kam brought Mrs Phua, Mr Siew and Miss Lim (first photo) to the Pioneer Tribute Tea Session at the MOE Heritage Centre on 19th September. That was not all – Ms Kam shared that some of her own students have also become teachers. This means there are three generations of teachers from Bendemeer Secondary! The teachers told us that Bendemeer Secondary has a strong school culture of caring teachers. Many alumni of Bendemeer Secondary would send their children to the school so it is not unusual for the teachers to teach children of their former students as well! As Miss Lim shared, “Our pioneers are role models. We don’t compete. We collaborate and always work as a team. It’s about servant leadership. So new teachers, when they come in, are assimilated into the culture.” Come join us for our Children’s Day celebrations on 3 October or any of our remaining tea sessions!
