School praised following visit - Letters to the Editor - The Brownsville Herald back Side Panel School praised following visit Posted 5 months ago Editor: On April 9 I had the privilege of visiting Canales Elementary School to read a story I had written about gum litter (“Grady Gumshoe and the Case of the Guilty Gumdroppers”). While I was there, I was struck by the friendliness of the staff and the welcoming atmosphere. But most impressive to me was the behavior of the fifth-graders, who were polite and well-mannered throughout my presentation. Clearly, their teachers had done an excellent job of teaching them the proper way to treat a visitor to their school, and yet they were able to engage in a lively, humorous discussion without losing sight of proper behavior. After I finished, they even waited quietly in line while I signed autographs of my story! Truly, Canales Elementary made me feel like a superstar! My congratulations to the principal, Margot Torres, and the teachers, and my thanks to Librarian Connie Pinkerton-Lopez for arranging my visit. And BISD should be proud of this gem on International Boulevard, a school that has the ability to make a total stranger feel so special. Go Bulldogs! Judy Coyne Brownsville
