Much has been written about the declining popularity of horse racing, and what can be done to bring the sport back into the national spotlight. In a recent blog post for The Post Game, sports agent Leigh Steinberg proposes something rather unique – a National Jockey League. As racing fans are aware, jockeys are some of the toughest athletes in any sport. However, as Steinberg writes, to many people, jockeys are ‘anonymous’. Steinberg thinks that the jockeys should be front and center in the public’s eye in order to promote the sport and encourage new fans. In collaboration with R.J. Kors, Steinberg envisions developing a National Jockey League, which would increase awareness of the sport. The idea calls for a racing schedule to be created that would highlight certain races throughout the year. These races would constitute a ‘season’. Five team captains would be selected, and they would each draft a team of nine jockeys. The teams would compete throughout the season, with each team having a different corporate sponsor.
