Much like the T-1000, Terminator is a franchise that just refuses to die. For a while, the upcoming sequel, Terminator 5, was stuck in a state of limbo, being constantly passed between various producers and script writers. Furthermore, the uncertainty of Arnold Schwarzeneggers involvement in the film also rendered progress on the fifth installment sluggish. However, it seems like everything has now fallen in place to get the franchise moving again. Casting the main roles seems completed, filming is due to begin in Atlanta and New Orleans, while a new title is already being passed around Hollywood. According to Moviehole and their sources, Terminator 5 will officially be titled Terminator: Genesis - Genesis being another one of those words like Rise, Dawn and Origins which always seems into make its way into the naming of sequels and reboots. We already know that Alan Taylor (Thor: The Dark World) is directing, while Emilia Clarke, Jason Clarke and Jai Courtney have been cast as Sarah Connor, John Connor and Kyle Reese respectively. Most importantly, Arnie is also due to return in the famous titular role. However, Moviehole also claim to know about important story and plot details for the sequel. With this in mind, you should consider the rest of the article rather spoilery. They are claiming Terminator: Genesis will follow a route similar to J.J. Abrams Star Trek, in that it will reboot the series while remaining tied to the original via some kind of weird (and pretty confusing) alternative time dimension (youre allowed to do this kind of crazy shit when youve got time travel in your story). The source also claims another good comparison could be with Back To The Future Part II, in particular the part when Marty and Doc need to return to 1955 again towards the end of the film. In this sense T5 will also be visiting pivotal scenes from the first two movies of the franchise. Apparently the writers have found a brilliant way of working this mechanic into the story so that they pay homage to the original, but also introduce a new scenario and characters. First, the film will be going back to 1984 and will see the the Terminator arrive again and begin his genocide of anyone named Sarah Connor. The sequel will apparently see many characters from the original (including Detective Hal Vukovich, Lieutenant Ed Traxler, Sarah’s roomie Ginger and even Pugsley the Iguana), although presumably theyll all be recast. Kyle Reese is also expected to head back in time to save Sarah, but dont expect things to pan out exactly like the original. Kyle ReeseKyle Reese Terminator 5 will also head back to the events of Terminator 2: Judgement Day, in particular the scene in which the cop-masquerading-T-1000 visits John Connors home to skewer his foster parents. How these events will ultimately tie into the wider story isnt known, and hopefully their not just a gimmick to remind people of the classic originals in an attempt to improve the quality of the sequel. However, it could be quite an interesting way of rebooting the franchise.
