Much made at the moment on elite taking over the arts. Re: Dame Judi Dench, in the Guardian. Sadly Audiences, on a large scale wont /dont go to reps, the venues dont exist or wouldnt accommodate them, hiring fees are huge and there just isnt the money in fringe. Why pay for a small low budget play when you can watch stars and latest box office hit, at home, for a fraction of the price? Simple economics, sad but a reality. Most drama schools are now universities, complete with loans available to all. Yes, a large amount of debt, but the repayments are dependent on earnings arent they? I cannot accept that Eton and Oxbridge hold a monopoly on the acting profession, Its a bit unfair to keep blaming Cumberbatch, Fox and Irons shouting the posh boys have it easy -what rubbish! Why not shout out against Sheridan Smith, Judi Dench and Maxine Peak? (Its unimaginative casting thats the main problem keeping a tiny pool in high profile jobs). Many jobbing and well establish actors fall into neither category: neither rich elite nor famous. My year at drama school certainly werent either! (Nor the year above below &c). Nor the vast majority of those with whom I have worked! Twas ever thus, that there are too many actors for not enough jobs. Many artists are creating their own work, much will never make it nor get made. Today though there is far more choice of training institutions, schemes and the web gives everyone a platform to show off their work. The problems start after training on trying to fathom how to get on in this industry: Who you know and large amount of luck and everything in between. Its unimaginative to blame a small group who work and people pay to see work.
