McEwan Wins PABCON Gold; Team USA Advances Danielle McEwan capped off a dominating week for Team USA as she won the Masters gold medal last Wednesday to give the U.S. five of the six gold medals at the 2014 Pan American Bowling Confederation Womens Championships in Cali, Colombia. McEwan defeated teammate Missy Parkin, 2-1, in the best-of-three championship match at the Cali Bowling Coliseum. The United States also won gold medals in doubles, trios, team and all-events. Parkin won the opening game of the championship match, 227-219, but McEwan rallied to take the next two games, 239-235 and 217-181. Parkin could have won the title in the second game, but left a 10-pin on her second shot in the 10th frame. This was my first time traveling with the whole team, and it was so amazing learning from them, McEwan said. It was awesome to spend time with the team because they are all so unbelievably knowledgeable, and I was just trying to keep up and learn as much as I could. In the semifinals, McEwan defeated Colombias Clara Guerrero, 2-0, in a dramatic finish. McEwan took the first game, 238-188, and Guerrero had a chance to force a decisive third game but got seven on her final ball to lose, 211-209. Parkin advanced to the gold-medal match by defeating teammate Liz Johnson, 2-1. Johnson took the opening game, 232-183, before Parkin won the next two, 242-201 and 216-214. The PABCON Womens Championships featured bowlers from 13 countries. In addition to the medal competition, four countries earned spots in the 2015 Pan American Games. The United States, Aruba, the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico all punched their tickets for Toronto next July. Bowl for the Cure Efforts Pick Up Steam This Month October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and the sport of bowling once again will support the fight against breast cancer through its ongoing Bowl for the Cure initiative. Bowl for the Cure is a year-round fundraising and breast cancer awareness effort sponsored by the United States Bowling Congress in partnership with Susan G. Komen, the worlds largest grassroots organization of breast cancer survivors and activists. Early detection and effective treatment have resulted in a 34 percent decline in breast cancer mortality in the United States since 1990, but for women ages 40-59, breast cancer remains the most common cause of cancer death in the nation. Through the support of local and state associations and bowlers throughout the country, more than $10 million in total donations have been made to Susan G. Komen through the Bowl for the Cure initiative. Each season, the bowling community comes together through Bowl for the Cure and other types of fundraising events to help in this ongoing battle against breast cancer, said USBC Executive Director Chad Murphy. This disease has affected so many, either directly or indirectly, and USBC will continue to do its part to help strike out breast cancer. Bowl for the Cure has several ways for the bowling community to help with fundraising efforts: * Shop - USBCBowlingStore has a great new selection of Bowl for the Cure merchandise for 2014, and 25 percent of all BFTC purchases will go to Susan G. Komen. * Donate - Anyone can make a direct impact by donating online, and every dollar will go directly to Komens fight against this deadly disease. * Participate - USBC has new event materials for Bowl for the Cure event planners, so now its easier to put together an event at your local bowling center. The materials can be found at BowlfortheCure, plus there is an event calendar that has a state-by-state listing of upcoming BFTC events. Visit BowlfortheCure to get involved and for more information about the USBCs Bowl for the Cure efforts and its partnership with Susan G. Komen.
