Mum Oh our dear mum we all do adore Always there for us all with your open door I still can feel the softness of your skin When you kissed me goodnight and tucked me in When we kids arrived back from school The smell of stew lingered within the hall Around the dinner table we all sat Our feet dangling and tickled by our cat You’ve always been game for a laugh No annoyance being splashed when I was in the bath Friday nights listening to records and dancing in the living room together Those days seem so long ago but I would do it all again I would never say ‘never’ Christmas day I will also never forget The quantities of food we all stuffed down our neck Watching the Wizard of Oz after lunch The sound of fruit and nuts in our mouths going crunch Christmas night tea the table would be laid In the centre the Christmas cake my big sister had made Triangular sandwiches, crisps, biscuits and pork pie To say I don’t miss being that child again would be a lie After all the clearing up was done We’d all sit down with you to play cards and dominoes for fun Mum you could now relax no longer feeling manic For Christmas day was nearly over the end of any panic. by Caroline Bernadette Johnson
