Mum question: I think Im writing to you for reassurance more than anything. My little girl is 4 weeks and 4 days old. Shes waking 3 times between 12-5. Every time she wakes I offer her my breast and she always takes it for varying lengths of time. I find it hard to know exactly what she wants and needs. I need to make sure shes in a deep sleep before I put her down otherwise shell wake up. Shes fine health wise and is steadily putting on weight. I have your book and I want to follow the attachment parenting philosophy but I worry Im not cut out for it. Im already exhausted and were only a month in. I think Im too scared to try bed sharing because of all the warnings. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Pinky says: - can you sleep during the day? At least, rest? This is a tough time but things will get easier - right now your baby has a tiny tummy and an immature nervous system, shes getting used to the world, and this may be her cluster feeding time. Babies can take a few weeks to develop a solid day/night cycle so right now its best to try and sleep or rest whenever you can, dont pack too much into your days and try offering feeds during the day around 3 hourly (not strictly , watch for signals) - when you see your baby putting her hands to her mouth or making sucking noises. Try carrying your baby in a carrier for a little while outside during the day to help her with her day/night cycle. Also have a look at my book Parenting By Heart to help you learn baby cues and simple tips to get through this time. You are doing a great job but please dont be anxious about asking for help - for most people, its a privilege to support and new mum and be involved with a new baby. shopwithpinky/parenting-by-heart-by-pinky-mckay shopwithpinky/pinky-bundle
