Mum question: Im feeling confused about whether Im doing the right thing. For about two weeks my 4.5 month old son watching me and my husband eat and drink intently. Ive also noticed the last week he has significantly increased his breastfeeds and duration. He can hold his head and neck, and has generally been reaching dev. Milestones v early (started teething and rolling at 3 months). My gp and child health nurse both said he can start solids now, but lots of online info incl. from ABA says at 6 months. I offered him mashed avo today and he had no problems swallowing it. He didnt have the reflex where his tongue pushed it out. The amount that he ate really suprised me and I had to mash up more as he got frustrated when I didnt continue to offer him more. But now Im wondering whether Ive offered this too young and not sure if I should continue?! Pinky says: There is a lot of confusing information around starting family foods. WHO say 6 months - generally around the middle of the first year is a good rule of thumb -some babies are ready a little earlier while others can be disinterested for a few months longer. You havent done anything wrong, you are watching your babys cues and development and you have consulted with health professionals who are caring for your baby. You can certainly slow down the introduction of family foods if you want to wait a few more weeks. I’ll post a blog about starting family foods. If you take things very slowly - e.g. dont offer more then this one meal at this stage and as long as you are also breastfeeding this will help him digest food and protect against potential allergies. Also, if you offer too many meals at this age you run the risk that he will cut down on breastfeeds and wean early or your milk supply will reduce. Breastmilk /milk is still the most important food for the first 12 months. beautifulbreastfeeding/from-breast-feeding-to-family-foods-starting-your-baby-on-solids/
