Mum question:Looking for some gentle advice for weaning. Unfortunately due to health reasons it looks like Im going to have to wean my son sooner then I had planned. He is currently 11 months old and I had planned to nurse until 2. I will continue to nurse until after 1 but my cutoff will need to be about 18 months max. Ive tried to have a look on the internet for different methods but most I have found are aimed at older toddlers. I want to be prepared in case I need to wean in the next few months. Also, is it normal to feel heartbroken about the possibility of weaning? I personally dont feel ready but if my health continues the way it is, I know it wont be the best mum I can be. I have so many conflicting thoughts on will our bond become less? Will he be traumatised from taking away his comfort? Is it wrong to stop breastfeeding at 1? Some advice would be really great. Thankyou in advance Pinky says: Please be reassured, you already have a beautiful bond with your baby, nothing can take that away. Yes it is completely normal to feel heartbroken about weaning - you have provided everything your baby needs , everything has come from you. Breastfeeding is an intrinsic part of your biology, its a relationship so it would be rare not to feel heartbroken that this special relationship is almost over. Regardless of reasons for weaning there is a grief process for most mothers. Also be aware that there is a hormonal withdrawal that can cause emotional swings too.
