Mum question:My son turns four in one week. He just started junior kindergarten in Ontario Canada. He goes on the bus at 8:30am Mon, Wed and Fridays (I should say I try to get him to go) and I pick him up at 1pm. He gets really upset in the mornings, cries huge tears and says he doesnt want to miss me. He has stayed at home with me for the most part and went to a friends who babysat part time until his little brother was born (19 months now). I am a gentle parent. I will not force him to go to school because I can see how upset and anxious it makes him. Hubby wants me to try.. So I am. It just hurts me seeing my son so upset. His teacher has written notes home in his communication bag saying he refuses to play at recess despite her getting senior kingergarten girls to hold his hand out to the playground. Hes shy but has always been social with neighborhood friends etc. I guess Im wondering what I should do to help him? What can I try? I comfort him when hes upset, talk to him about it and say Im proud of him for going when he does go to school... but I feel like its going nowhere. Should I home school? Im lost Pinky says: He is so little yet, maybe he isnt quite ready for the separation. Are you able to go with your son and stay for some sessions until he feels more comfortable, then gradually withdraw your presence ? Can you plan a few playdates with another child/children from his kindergarten so he can have a buddy to hang out with? Or can you simply wait another year? Often taking the pressure off and waiting that extra time gives your child a chance to mature and handle separation more easily.
