Mum reassurance please: Im a first time mum of a 9 week old baby - TopicsExpress

Mum reassurance please: Im a first time mum of a 9 week old baby boy. I recently was talking to a friend about him (they happen to be a GP) and the topic of sleep and self soothing came up. They asked me if hes able to settle himself yet and fall asleep with little intervention, and my reply was simply no! That I cuddle and rock him to sleep (hes breasted but only feeds to sleep at night time after his bath). Even though they didnt say anything judgemental it got me thinking when is it an appropriate time for him to start doing this? I dont believe in letting him cry it out, to be honest he cries very little and is generally a happy baby because I know his cues and attend to his needs when they arise. Personally I think its still too early for this type of treatment, but her question has got me second guessing myself a bit. We co sleep at night time but he sleeps in his cot during the day, so his day time naps would be the only time he sleeps by himself. Am I right in thinking hes still way too young? Pinky says: Yes your instincts are spot on! Please dont worry about this - most babies under 4 months (at least) and even older need some help to wind down and settle to sleep. You can give your baby opportunities to settle when you feel ready, some babies have a wee chat and then doze off when they are closer to 3 or 4 months but others need help for much longer. You are doing a wonderful job.
