Murderers are murderers, plain and simple and do not represent a point of view we are bound to respect as valid, but, by the same token I also resent the fact that I somehow I have to cosign as valuable speech whatever sophomoric, racist drivel any random publication pumps out in order to establish my free speech bonafides. Based on the stuff I looked at over the past two days, Charlie Hebdo traded in both sharp elbowed--sometimes offensive--trenchant satire that was worthy of celebration and sophomoric meanspirited crap that was worthy of scorn. This is a discussion the murderers have forfeited the right to be a part of. And although its completely appropriate, and, perhaps necessary in the aftermath of all this, to defiantly affirm our ideals of free expression no matter the nature of that expression, there is a crucial distinction between affirming ideals and giving publicly expressed bigotry against marginalized groups the patina of virtue.
