Musculoskeletal Wednesday by Michel van Exsel, MSc: Low back pain is a global health problem in which the majority of the cases a categorized as non-specific low back pain (NSLBP). Physical therapists worldwide make use of motor control exercise (MCE) in this population. However there are some contrasting findings in recent literature about the effect of MCE. The objective of this present meta-analysis was to investigate the short- and long-term effect of MCE in patients with chronic and recurrent LBP. After searching for relevant articles and applying in- and exclusion criteria, 16 studies were included with PEDro Scores varying between 4 and 9. The main findings are presented here: - MCE vs. general exercise: the results favour MCE with regard to pain (short- and intermediate term) and disability (short- and long-term); - MCE vs. spinal manipulation: MCE scored better with regard to disability (short- intermediate- and long-term), however no significant differences were found with regard to pain; - MCE vs. minimal interventions: MCE scored better for both disability and pain during all the follow-up moments. The results suggest that MCE are valuable in treating chronic or recurring LBP. However more studies are needed to investigate the effect in different subgroups of patients. > From: Byström et al, Spine 15 (2013) 350-358. All rights reserved to Lippincott Williams & Wilkins Inc.
