Mushonga Mukuru in top Kwekwe show KWEKWE — Peter Moyo and his Utakataka Express put up a five- star performance in front of a capacity crowd at Tropicana Hotel on Friday evening, as he introduced his debut album as band leader since the death of his father Tongai. Utakataka managed to entertain the sell-out crowd who braved the harsh winter night to attend an open-air show which ran to the wee hours of the morning — an Utakataka trademark perfected by the late Tongai, who used to play long hours even when he was frail. The young musician, who seems to be fighting hard to keep himself in the big league, put up a polished show with improved vocals, as he exhibited a massive improvement in vocals than his Mushonga Mukuru recording. He even took the lead guitar, as he performed Pasi Rino Rakaoma and his late father’s song a crowd favourite — Chiuya Wakabata Mwanje — to showcase a journey of improvement and dedication to the legacy that his father left. Band manager Sukhulube Dube said Peter was serious about keeping his father’s legacy alive while also charting his own path in the musical industry. “We know people are saying Peter should be his own man. He is working hard on his musical career, but there is no denying that he is here because of his late father. This remains Utakataka,” he said. “Our main aim is to preserve and build on the legacy created by Tongai and stay in the big boys’ league.” Tawanda Jumo, a close friend and mentor to Peter, said he was impressed by the Friday show and said if Peter continued to work hard, there would be no stopping him. “This show was great, his new songs sounded better from down here and what this tells me is that he can only improve. I am proud of his work,” he said. Revellers were kept on their feet with the lively dances and flawless instrumentation from Utakataka’s great hits, despite the freezing weather.
