Music 101: The musical notes of the chromatic scale, as they exist - TopicsExpress

Music 101: The musical notes of the chromatic scale, as they exist in Western music today, comprise 12 distinct groups of frequencies or pitches. The symbols A, A#, B, C, C#, D, D#, E, F, F#, G and G# were chosen to represent these groups of pitches (where the # symbol represents a sharp note). To the human ear, sound frequencies which differ by a factor of 2 (i.e. halved or doubled) sound highly similar to one another. For instance, a note with a frequency of 440 Hertz (this happens to be the note A above middle C) would sound similar to a note with frequencies of 220 or 880 Hertz; they would just sound lower or higher. ahmiz.hubpages/hub/The-Musical-Notes-A-Brief-History
