Music Monday Delfeayo’s Dilemma addresses the change in sound between the Major and Minor chord. I wrote it as a vehicle for us to solo over six bar phrases. This song was strongly influenced by the music that my father was playing back in the 60’s. They used to play a tune called Whistle Stop that had a bar of 3/4 in it just like this one. Melodically, I used a lot of contrary motion. One theme that I like to address in my music is evident in measures 40 and 41. I like to isolate an interval, in this case a perfect fifth, and then play it up, then down. At letter B, the rhythm section plays in dotted quarter note time. Layering rhythms grouped in 4 with ones grouped in 6 I learned from African music. I always like to give the drummer some hits like in measure 15 to give them something to “hold on to” within the form. The melody is essentially in A Flat. Then I solo on the same changes, but in G. Branford solos in the key of A, Kenny plays in G and the head out is in A Flat again. Enjoy, Wynton
