Music Therapy with Children A favorite time of mine here at Buffalo Hearing & Speech Center is when I have an opportunity to observe our teachers, therapists and classroom staff working with our beautiful children. Most of the children in our classroom programs are classified as Preschoolers with a handicapping condition. We work primarily with children on the autism spectrum and with children who are exhibiting behavioral and emotional disturbances. One of the most fascinating therapies we offer in our schools and on an out-patient basis is Music Therapy. Watching our Music Therapists work with children is an uplifting experience, in that children have a natural draw toward relating to music, rhythm and movement. Music Therapy is an established health care profession that uses music to address physical, emotional, cognitive, and social needs of people of all ages. This particular therapy is an interpersonal process in which the therapist leverages music to improve an individual’s quality of life. The value of music therapy to those with autism and special needs is extraordinary and unique relative to other therapies commonly received. Music is special in a way that humans universally can appreciate, especially those with autism and other special needs. Music is a medium that transforms those subjected to it. Increasingly recognized music therapy research and science shows that music positively affects special needs individuals’ mood, processing, sensations, and ability. As certain music is played/chosen, it can powerfully evoke certain responses. Often progress transcends what might be otherwise possible in other therapies or settings. Here at BHSC, the music therapy sessions are also cued into what is being targeted in our Literacy intervention curriculum so that classroom academics can be reinforced in a fun and natural process using the vehicle of music and movement. We set goals toward progress in the areas of speech / communication, socialization / behavior, cognition, self-esteem, & self-expression. The Buffalo Hearing & Speech Music Therapy Program provides a unique opportunity for individuals with autism and other special needs, whatever they may be, to embark upon a stimulating and creative musical journey. Progress is made resulting in more rewarding interpersonal relationships and experiences. I invite you to watch this short video to hear a little more about our music therapy program.
