Music and folklore in Sicily’s Valley on european independent tours to Italy or european tour packages created by european vacation trip planer. The first week of February sees the 77th edition of the Sagra del mandorlo in fiore in Agrigento’s Valley of the Temples (Feb. 2-9), a party to welcome spring and observe the blooming of the almond trees. Throughout the years, the event has become ever more international, while at the same time maintaining its original cultural significance, with folk traditions on show to the rest of the world. The celebration begins with the lighting of the friendship torch in front of the Temple of Concordia, followed by a stroll of the rest of the Valley at sunset. Then, various folkloristic groups show off in procession through the streets of the city, costumed as their native lands want, creating diversity united in a symbolic gesture for world peace. The festival closes on Sunday, February 9, with another procession, this time of Sicilian wagons and musical groups, moving from Agrigento to the Temples and culminating in a highly-evocative scene in before the Temples of Concordia and Hercules. It is here that the Golden Temple is awarded by an international jury: the trophy, shaped like the Temple of Castor and Pollux, goes to the winning folk groups for best dance, traditional costume and music.
