Music is a tremendous part of our culture. The Journal of Personality and Social Psychology found that long-term effects of repeated exposure to violent music lyrics can lead to an aggressive personality. In 2009, Florence & the Machine debuted their song “Kiss with a Fist”. The chorus of the song was: “You hit me once/ I hit you back/You gave a kick/I gave a slap/You smashed a plate over my head/Then I set fire to our bed.” Music has the power to shape our thoughts and emotions. Let’s begin to critically think about what song lyrics are saying.
