Now, in an attempt to take music to those who cannot afford to learn it, the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) is running a project called Music Education for Children. The initiative was started in January with the purpose to provide music education to kids from less-privileged backgrounds. “Music is vital for a child’s exposure. Some people have the means to pay and learn the arts. But we want to provide it to kids who don’t have the means,” says Suvarnalata Rao, musicologist and head of programming (Indian music), NCPA. The NCPA has so far collaborated with Sundatta School in Grant Road, a municipal school at Colaba and the Citi Academy for Special Education (CASE) near Haji Ali. Explaining the way the project functions, Rao says, “The sessions are conducted twice a week. The programme targets students between the ages of seven and 14. We have adopted three schools with 150 kids learning music. Two more schools will join us next month.” Talking about how the project has fared so far, Priya Deshpande, director of CASE, says, “We have kids who need special attention and help. Music has proved therapeutic for them. They have shown remarkable improvement in academics as well.” Besides taking music to children, the project also provides employment to young people looking to make a career in music. “The classes are conducted by music enthusiasts who do not want to do anything besides being involved in music. We have a teacher who is an electrician, but wants his full-time profession to be teaching music,” says Rao. Music enthusiasts in the age group of 19-28 years can get a scholarship of R5,000 per month for advance training in Hindustani music.
