#MusicMonday This is the Mariah - Bluesy Mariah - that inspired me, when I was growing up. My dad always played a WIDE variety of music in the house (from Billy Joel to James Brown), but he was definitely partial to Mariahs powerhouse vocals. I remember being mesmerized by the stark contrast between her ethereal head voice tones and her piercing chesty belts. The influence of her unique vocal style is clearly evident in sooooo many of the vocalists that I hear and work with today. This clip just reminds me why she got so famous in the first place... Before all the coverage of her personal relationships and whatnot, she was just an amazing vocalist. Clips like this also remind me of why Im so passionate about my work as a vocal coach. Its one thing to feel that you have been given a gift. I meet prideful singers every day, who feel as though they are above lessons - I have a GIFT!, they boast. But even gifts need to be properly maintained and taken care of. After all, a gift can be lost. ...it can also be broken. Take care of your instruments, my singer people. You only get one.
