“Musical Potpourri” Concert set for 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 3 The public is invited for music and treats as the Southwest Symphony opens the season with its “Musical Potpourri” concert at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 3, at the First Southern Baptist Church, 621 N. Western Ave. There is no admission charge but a free will donation will be accepted and memberships may be renewed at this time. This will be the first concert for the Southwest Symphony under the direction of conductor Mark Compaan. “We’re excited that Mark has joined us and we think he brings a strong level of experience and musicianship to the group,” said Kay Burtzloff, president of Southwest Symphony Society. The string orchestra will start the concert with “March” by Bach, “Classic Bits and Pieces” arranged by Michael Story, “String Along” by Lennie Niehaus, “Minuet from String Quartet in C Major by Haydn, “Fantasy on Simple Gifts” arranged by Robert Kerr. After intermission, the full orchestra will perform “Finlandia” by Jean Sibelius, “Amazing Grace” by Elliot Del Borg, “Brandenburg Sinfonia” by Bach, “Patriotic Melodies that Stirred Our Nation” arranged by Jack Bullock, “Sleepers Wake by Bach and Chorale and March From ‘1812’by Tchaikovsky. Orchestra members include Violins – Bethany Adams, Chris Seeman, Blinda Massa, Hannah Horinek, Hope Horinek, Divonna Thornburg; Viola- Nancy Allen; Cello - Laura Hopkins, Annette Lemert-Larrabee, Diana Grajeda; Bass -Ted Diepenbrock; Oboe - Alisa Henderson; Bassoon - Lydia Augustine, Jasmine Howell; Flute - Claire Strachan, Jerilee Rediger; Clarinet - Kim Allen, Shelly Rowson, Callie Mae Paulson; Trumpet - Erika Clausing; Trombone - Claire Martin; French Horn - Lance Burnett; Tuba - Zeb Tiedemann and Percussion - Grant Mathews. There will be a short annual membership meeting at the concert. We have to have an annual meeting every year and we find that it works really well in conjunction with this concert. We promise it will only take 10 minutes, said Burtzloff. The Southwest Symphony Society is a Liberal non-profit organization dedicated to promoting classical and contemporary music in the community utilizing the talents of local and professional musicians.
