Musical montage from Spanish Renaissance film: La Conjura de el Escorial during reign of King Philip II of Spain/KP2 QE1 campaign against MQS betrothed Don Juan gone awry? KP2 had married Marie Queen of Scots/ MQS childhood sister French princess Elizabeth Valois who died in childbirth. KP2 1st wife was QE1s sister Mary Tudor. After Valoiss death, KP2 then wed Hapsburgs Ann of Austria (blond queen in montage). KP2s close associate was the Prince EBOLI - Rui de Silva who in turn was wed to 13 year old Princess Eboli - Ana de Mendoza (actress Julia Ormond with eye patch). Princess Eboli is also a character in Verdis opera Don Carlos. Princess Eboli had been close friends with Spanish queen - French princess Elizabeth Valois. After the death of her husband the Prince, Princess Eboli became attached to a Spanish Secretary of State Perez. together they were accused of betraying state secrets which led to imprisonment for Eboli in 1579. What initiated the intrigue relates to the assassination of ESCOBEDO who had begun his career with Prince Eboli then later became Secretary to DON JUAN of Austria. Don Juan, as half brother of KP2, was the last betrothed of Marie Queen of Scots. The plan being that Don Juan would lead an expedition to England to rescue the Scottish Queen imprisoned by Queen Elizabeth / QE1. Unfortunately Don Juan perished from war injuries before the rescue could take place. It was rumored that Escobedo discovered a love affair between Princess Eboli and Perez. Sometime thereafter Escobedo was killed on Easter 1578 outside the church of St. Maria in Madrid Spain. Who ordered the killing is unknown but with plenty of rumors implicating both KP2, as a rival to his half-brother and Perez. KP2 had originally ordered that Escobedo become attached to Don Juan as a spy (code name Verdinegro) for KP2, but Escobedo changed his loyalties to Don Juan himself. For some UNKNOWN reason Perez began to intrigue against Escobedo. Perez forged documents coming from Don Juan and slandered Escobedo to King Philip II, eventually appealing to KP2 for assent to Escobedos death. Perez thrice unsuccessfully attempted with poison before succeeding by an assassin swordsman. Don Juan then died on campaign and the fact that KP2 was being falsely manipulated by Perez came to light. KP2 ordered the arrest and imprisonment of Perez and his believed accomplice Princess Eboli. Eboli remained interred for life. Perez escaped but with documents incriminating King Philip in the murder, managing to entangle the legal process and gaining his own following rivaling that of the King. To bypass Perezs legal argument KP2 switched the case to ecclesiastical courts (church) and changed the accusation to Heresy under the Inquisition. The people began to riot due to their perception of the KP2 perversion of the legal system. Perez escaped to France disguised as a shepherd. In retaliation KP2 executed without trial the Chief Justice responsible for Perezs detention. Perez then further traveled to England under the PROTECTION of Queen Elizabeth, Cecil and Anthony Bacon (which makes one wonder if QE1 was behind the sudden campaign against MQSs betrothed Don Juans aide Escobedo by Perez). The Spanish King continued unsuccessfully to pursue Perez in England with assassins. Oddly QE1 it seems, later wanted to get rid of Perez (to clean-up evidence for her involvement in the Escobedo campaign?) and implicated her physician Dr. Rodrigo LOPEZ. Perez escaped again dying in Paris in 1611 but Dr. Lopez was executed by QE1 by a false accusation that he wanted to poison QE1. Lopez had been a sometime agent of QE1-Walsingham obtaining documents from Spain & Portugal. (See earlier post on Dr. Lopez)
