*Muslim Footsteps Quiz* This was indeed a dialogue that took place between Nabi Ibrahim AS and his son Ismail AS (and not Ishaq AS as claimed by Christian and Jewish scriptures). It comes from Al Quran, 37:102. A few important points we can learn: Nabi Ibrahim AS had, for decades, longed for a progeny and in his old age, Allah granted him with a son. Imagine all the couples in the world who have difficulty conceiving, and how precious that child is when it finally arrives. Ibrahim AS loved his son fiercely. This conversation took place as Ismail AS was entering his early teens – an age where the father and son bond is so precious. When Allah told him to sacrifice his long awaited and only child, imagine the dilemma Ibrahim AS must have felt. Yet he understood that Ismail AS was a trust from Allah, that he came from Allah, and that Allah has the right to demand him back at any time. Although he was ready to sacrifice his son, he also asked his son for his opinion, hence this conversation. Ismail AS understood that his father was a prophet and was simply asked to obey Allah, and therefore, as a pious person in his own right, consented and cooperated. At the moment of sacrifice, Allah switched the conditions – the knife became blunt, and as a reward for Ibrahim’s AS willingness to sacrifice and obey Allah, a ram was sent to substitute Ismail AS for the sacrifice. Not only that, Ibrahim AS was shortly after that granted another son, Ishaq AS. From those two sons descended all the subsequent Prophets and Messengers, including Musa AS, Isa AS and Muhammad SAW. They all carried the message of all Ibrahimic religions, including Islam, Judaism and Christianity. In a few days, we will commemorate this sacrificial ritual on the day of Eid ul Adha, and every year, Muslims around the world will be reminded of the joys of obedience and sacrifice to Allah.
