Must Own Heavy Metal/Hard Rock Albums : Artist : Rush Album : 2112 Released : April 1, 1976 Metal Mofo Album Rating : 5/5 (Absolute Classic) If there is one band that through the years has never gotten the respect that they deserve, especially from critics its the Canadian Trio Rush. But it really doesnt matter, because they are so beloved by their longtime fans, and more importantly their musical peers, who continue to praise them the world over. The body of musical work the band has left behind is one of the most impressive, and influential to many genres, but especially Heavy Metal, and Hard Rock music. Not to say its been easy. By the time Rush began to work in their fourth studio album 2112, their record company had just about given up on them. Their previous three albums had not sold very well, especially in America. They were warned that if they made another concept record they could be dropped from the label. Thankfully though they stuck to their guns, well sort of. 2112 is half of a concept, with the excellent seven part suite to begin the album. But side two is just a collection of great songs. Either way you look at it the album became a huge success, and finally would break them in America. When members of The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame wanted Rush inducted, and other members werent sure, they played the 2112 album front to back for the committee, pretty much solidifying that there would be no excuse why Rush shouldnt be enshrined. This is Geddy, Alex, and Neil, three of the greatest musicians on the planet just beginning their prime. --Jesse
