Must See Movie Of The Week #12: The Matrix (1999) - Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss. Directed by The Wachowski Brothers. Thomas Anderson leads a double life. He is a regular guy who keeps his nose clean in one life. In the other life he is Neo - a hacker searching for the answer to the question: What is The Matrix? What he finds is not the world he thinks he lives in. Its a digital reality, created to subdue the human race so their energy can be harvested to power the machines that enslave them. And so begins the rebellion... The Matrix is one of the most visually arresting movies you are likely to see that was utterly jaw dropping on its first release and has been imitated, copied and spoofed so many times since. The action is comic book insane and brilliant, and the gunplay unique with much of it under cranked in slow motion to make it look cool (the first ever use of Bullet time photography - so called by the filmmakers). The story is great and ultimately quite chilling - I mean, how would you know if your life was real or just a digital creation? Sit back and enjoy the wild ride that is The Matrix. Forget the sequels though, this stands up on its own and the sequels were, quite frankly, a bit shit. Free your mind...
