Must pay a complement to the NZ public health system. Finally got - TopicsExpress

Must pay a complement to the NZ public health system. Finally got to Whangarei Hospital yesterday to have my fat ankle examined. Was a little early for my 1020hrs appointment and was sent straight to the Imagining department for X-rays of the ankle, especially under load(ie. my weight!). Had a good book, Ken Folletts World Without End, but didnt have to wait long before I was shown into Margy Pohls cubicle. She was like a breath of fresh air and could have been anyone of the staff as she was wearing only a simple, colourful dress with nothing identifying her as an orthopedic specialist or simple doctor, for that matter. But she was extremely buoyant and uplifting as she explained what we were looking at on the X-rays. I said I had been hesitant about having anything done as the last specialist(about 12 years ago) had told me they would lock the ankle up if it got painful. Margy said this was an option but, in my case, she felt a better option was to do an ankle replacement!! You had to be under 100kg. Im 90kg! I told her rather too hastily!! There is a slight risk of infection as ankle replacements are not so well developed as they are for hips however I was overcome with her solution to my fat ankle. There has to be some more detailed scanning which should be done in a couple of months or more before arrangements can be made for the op!! Still the wheels are turning. The extra good news was that Margy said I would still be able to cycle and maybe get back to skiing. Running was not advisable. Running was the last thing on my mind.
