Must share a very happy moment. My favorite 12 year old made her schools volleyball team! Shelby, Daves donor recipient, is getting to play her first ever sport!! Even though he was very athletic, David was never allowed to play real sports because he had an artificial heart valve from the time he was an infant. He was an avid cyclist, vacation adventurer, and avid sports fan (from the couch), but never got to play team sports (oh- and his mom was super over-protective). From signing Grace up for hockey at 3 (wth!!) to baseball for Jack, he loved that our kids got to play all kinds of sports. Except soccer- he hated soccer. Two years ago, Shelby was in Childrens Memorial on 6 liters of oxygen. Then she got her miracle and has never stopped since. Im sure her ever playing volleyball, let alone living a normal life, where more than her parents ever let themselves hope for. I am as proud of Shelby as if she were one of my own. But more than anything, I am proud of Jennifer Hardwick Martin and Scott Martin for letting her live her life. Letting her enjoy and revel in the joys of being a kid. They have been through the unimaginable as parents and still have the courage to let her fly and spread her wings. None of us could have imagined two years ago that life would be like this. April 18th will be Daves 2nd eternal birthday and April 19th will be Shelbys 2nd birthday. Two souls....one spunky, beautiful girl that was born to be awesome. I will always love and miss him, he was the love of my life, but I will always be eternally grateful for this chance to know that a part of him lives on. Shelby reminds me so much of him- perseverance, heart, no self pity. Life is tough and they are tougher. In two weeks I will get to meet this family that has become part of my family. My BFFs (Amy Amy Tucker and Rich Anita Graves) and I are taking a roadtrip so we can run in a 5k for donor awareness. Shelby is the walk Marshall for the Red Shoe Run and Team Shelby is running /raising funds in Davids honor. (for clarification, I use the word running loosely when I refer to the three of us.) #TeamShelby #TeamDave
