My 4 siblings & I learned to swim from a Safety Patrol team at Fontana Public Beach back in the 1960s. We lived just a half mile from the lake, so we spent most of our summer days at that beach. My mom was able to take 5 small kids to the beach and feel confident that there were eyes on each of us even if hers were busy with one of us. Throughout my life I have held a variety of lake related jobs, as well as spent a lot of time out on the water just having fun. I can tell you from experience that there is no way Geneva Lake would be the vacation destination it is, and has been, without the Patrol. Without the instruction, prevention and literally life saving actions of the Patrol, it would easily be one of the most dangerous lakes, instead of the one of the most safe. Think about having as many as 5,000 motor boats/sailboats/personal watercraft/ on a lake that is a little more than 5,000 acres. Now add that many of those vessels are moving randomly around, some towing skiers or tubers, and some are just floating with swimmers around them. Now add that many, if not the majority, of the operators are novice boaters at best. And I havent even covered the thousands of swimmers crowding the beaches. Yet Geneva Lake has a record of being one of the safest lakes in the country! That record is the direct result of the efforts of the WSP. They are the best of the best, and an absolute necessity for our lake!
