My 8 year old son had a suspected appendicitis, so we rushed him to the local hospital, however the local hospital childrens ward was closed-A&E had to ring around to find the nearest Hospital children wards that was not only open but could take him. Well Middlesbrough, Stockton, Hartlepool & Darlington were either closed or full, so the only options left were Durham & Leeds, bloody miles away. St Johns were asked to take him to Durham, however they didnt get the message until late for the A&E was in chaos and the staff were run off their feet trying to cope. My son had to be given morphine for the pain, eventually we got to Durham, he was there over night, lucky for him it turned out to be just a swelling of the lymph nodes and not his appendix, if it had been the later he may not have made it to Durham and may not have made it to see Christmas.
