Now I sorta know what the Chaplain meant about the red tape to cut through! Not even 3/8 done! At least at Chapman I had my weekends off! Old Testament Bible Dictionary Project: Exodus / Aaron / Sinai Exodus is the second book of the five books dating back to 1445 BC and known as the Pentateuch or Torah of the Old Testament. In the Hebrew Bible it is referred to as Shemoth and the English designation was taken from the Septuagint title, Exodus. Jewish and Christian tradition has believed Moses to be the author, however, controversy arose in the 19th century. It is now thought that it could go back as far as the 6th century during Babylonian exile that the first draft occurred known as the Yahwist. Some key themes, purposes, events, and personalities in Exodus is Moses was born, Moses chosen to lead the Israelites out of Egyptian slavery, and the Ten Commandments where written on two tablets by the hand of God himself. At the birth of Moses Pharaoh feared the growth rate of the Hebrews and ordered all male Hebrew children to be thrown into the Nile. Moses’s mother hid him for three months but when she could no longer hide Moses she constructed an ark and placed it by the river bank. Moses was found by Pharaoh’s own daughter, which she had compassion for Moses, and later adopted him. Later when Moses was 40 years of age (40 years in the wilderness) he encountered God through a burning bush. God spoke to Moses through the burning bush telling him that he was chosen to lead his people, the Israelites, out of Egyptian slavery. The center account master piece regarding Moses is the events that took place at Mount Sinai. The Ten Commandments being the only commandments spoken straight from God, all others came through prophets, were inscribed by the hand of God on two tablets. The first two tablets did not last long due to Moses anger when he came down from Mount Sinai observing his people worshiping a golden calf resulting in the tablets being broken. Aaron was the elder son of Amram and Jochebed, descendant of Levi, and brother to Moses and Miriam. Aaron had a wife, Elisheba, and four sons: Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar with Aaron living 137 years. Aaron played a subordinate role in comparison to Moses and was ignored until Moses showed unwillingness to obey God’s call to free the Israelites. Aaron may have played a subordinate role to Moses, however, became Israel’s first High Priest. One of his burdens he had to bore was the death of two of his sons for an ungodly sacrifice made and he was restricted from mourning for them. Being at Moses side serving as spokesman in front of Pharaoh, he stretched out the staff of Moses bringing multiple plaques onto Pharaoh and his land. While in the wilderness Aaron helped Moses hold up the staff as a symbol of God’s power. While at Sinai Aaron and his two elder sons got called to go up the mountain where they showed fellowship. At this time Moses left Aaron in charge as Moses went further up the mountain. Due to Moses delay returning the Israelites asked Aaron to make gods for them because of restlessness. At Moses return seeing the sin, allowed by Aaron, being performed by his people resulted in the first set of tablets with God’s writings of the Ten Commandments to be broken. Aaron somehow passed God’s judgment when Moses sister (Miriam) and he spoke against the marriage of Moses and the Cushite woman. Miriam got judged severally probably because she was seen as to be the instigator. Mt. Sinai
