My Christmas story is from 1973. My dad was in the Air Force and away at temporary duty in Guam and we were at his regular base in Maine. Of course we had a white Christmas, but it was sad since daddy couldnt get home. Mom was trying to keep everyones spirits up. She worked at the base hobby shop in the ceramics department. She just had to be there to fire the ovens and help with people that were learning the art. So she spent a lot of her days doing projects on her own. She made 3 ceramic Christmas trees. The kind that have little holes drilled in it for the plastic lights and a light bulb inside. One for each of us to have in their bedroom. She would sneak up and turn them on some time after dinner and we always walked into our rooms to go to bed and see those lights. I still have that tree and use it on my desk. Now it is a reminder of her. Oh, and another Christmas memory from that same year. My dad called and told us the Guam tour had become permanent. We didnt know if that meant we were to be separated another 2 years or not. But permanent duty usually means your family can join you if you arent in a war zone or really isolated base. So we knew we would be able to join him soon. But little did we know, he made that call from the front gate of the base. We were so surprised when he came through the front door that very night. I love that Christmas surprise. No present held a candle to that one. Blessings and hugs to all.
