My Dad has been really ill. But, thanks to the great folks at Cabrini, he has sufficiently progressed in his healing to have been discharged and allowed to go home today. I have been trying to help my parents out a bit since my return from a beautiful wedding in Upstate New York. My beautimous brides family sure was great at throwing a nice celebration. For those of us who grew up in the AP (Avoyelles Parish), the city of Alexandria was often our destination when we headed for businesses that were not quite as common or available in our more rural environs. Leaving the uppermost parish of Cajun country to enter Rapides parish could be for either fun or for serious reasons. We drove there for some of our first dates to go to movies and restaurants. We headed there for doctors and hospitals. If we wanted to head to a real zoo, Alexandria was the place to go. I saw my first real concert at the coliseum there (Black Oak Arkansas). Leaving Cajun country was different. Fewer folks understood French. Crawfish hadnt caught on yet. People we encountered said this and that instead of dis an dat . . . and they had no idea who your momma am em was :-) But we all cherished our trips to the not-so-Cajun city when it was for happy days and good times. Who hadnt gone to the drive-in movies near the north circle with a couple of friends hidden in your Daddys car trunk? What red blooded Young Cajun Dude didnt take his date to the theater in Alec to see The Exorcist . . . knowing his chances of getting hugged tightly would be much higher. Who didnt love an occasional trip to England Air Force Base to see The Thunderbirds! The capital of CENLA gave us all that and more. Yes, we had a special affinity for Alexandria growing up. If you have memories of going there when you were growing up, SHARE this post and leave comments about the memories of places and activities in Alec that you cherish.
