My Dog Tried To Attack Someone So I Gave Him a Treat: In 9th - TopicsExpress

My Dog Tried To Attack Someone So I Gave Him a Treat: In 9th grade, I was walking my dog after he ate his dinner around 8pm. It gets quite dark during that time and my neighborhood did not have many street lamps posted. However, it was a safe community so I never worried. The usual routine during the walks is that if I see another dog owner walking towards me, I move to the other side of the street. My dog had a habit getting a little rowdy when he sees other dogs. Maybe it is because he is a Jindo which is a breed known to be slighty aggressive. But this one time, there was not a dog in sight but a person walking by himself so I didn’t move and I just kept on walking. You see, Romie (my dog’s name) never showed any interest toward another human being. Just when we were about to cross path with each other, without any warning, Romie suddenly lunged at him baring his fangs and tried to sink his teeth into this guy. I barely had to the strength to hold my dog back. He kept growling and barking viciously. I could see his saliva flying around like a mad dog. Romie is my dog but even I got scared of him when I was seeing how he was reacting. What was even more surprising was that the guy wasn’t fazed at all. He just kept walking away while staring at me. I will be honest… I did not punish my dog in any way. When I got home, I showered him with pets and hugs for hours, gave him treats and said, “good job!” Here is the thing; I recognized the guy the moment I saw him. I knew who he was and I wish I did move to the other side of the street but my pride got in the way. I didn’t want to show I was bothered by him (which I was by the way). This was the guy who used to harass me a bit in school for being Korean. He was a tall white male with medium build and a shaved head who did not like Asians at all, especially my race. He would make harsh comments and make me feel uncomfortable all the time during the AP History class. The teacher used to make him sit outside at the hallway because of his rude behavior. When I used to ride the bus and there was one seat left and it happened to be where this guy was sitting. I was forced to ask if I could sit with him because I had no choice and he blatantly said no. Standing there in front of everyone on a moving bus was not a pleasant feeling but this one girl offered her seat and got up to sit next to him. After that, I always walked thirty minutes to school. I wanted to avoid him at all costs. Deep down inside, I think my dog really sensed how I was feeling. Or maybe he sensed a negative vibe from the guy and wanted to protect me. Either way, this is why I love dogs although I am allergic to all animals with fur. They have this ability to understand how you are feeling better than people you may know without communicating with words. For this reason, often I believe it is not what you say or how you say it that can make someone understand your thoughts or feelings. Words are sometimes misleading and can be meaningless… sometimes you have to be deaf to understand a someone’s heart. Maybe everything was just a pure coincidence. How can a dog be aware of these things? But after that night, my dog never once showed any hostility to another person. And counting today, twelve years has passed... so I would like to believe otherwise
