My Facebook timeline is filled with opinions - all kinds of opinions - about the Israeli/Palestinian conflict. Its a very complicated, nuanced issue, and for American Jews especially, inextricably linked with a long history of religious persecution culminating in the Holocaust. As a liberal American Jew, I equally love and support Israel, cringe at what the Israeli government is doing now in Gaza, intensely distrust the propaganda coming out of Gaza via Hamas, am furious at the human rights abuses perpetrated by the Israeli government on the Palestinian people in the name of self-defense, and am apalled by otherwise well-meaning friends who refuse to see how their criticism of Israel slides effortlessly into anti-Semitism, If all of this sounds contradictory and schizo, welcome to the Israeli/Palestinian conflict. There are no easy answers here. The issue isnt black and white, its a thousand shades of grey. And Im tired, so very, very tired of reading barely informed missives from people who wont step outside their own echo chambers.
