My GARBAGE THESIS. Part Four: How the UNDERPRIVILEGED RE-USE. Once upon a time Residential Districts were separate from Commercial Areas. If you needed to shop you would go Downtown where all the main department stores were. Physicians, Lawyers, and other professionals offering their services were also to be found Downtown, in designated blocks of buildings. Then there was also, the popular, the sha3bi, areas. Even though some were shabbier than others, or even downright slums, they were similar in the fact that the same camaraderie existed in them all. An extended family atmosphere prevailed. The streets were narrow and dimly lit, and the houses stuck to each other. It stands to reason that the poorer you are the less you buy. And ..... the less you throw. The baked beans, فول مدمس , their main staple meal, they could buy in the street just below. A junior member of the household would be sent down with the small metal pot to be filled. The same pot for heating, storing and eating from. Rooftops سطوح were very busy, as they are to this day. Essentially for storage and hanging out clothes to dry, they were also places to indulge in favourite pastimes. Be that simply drinking tea and listening to the radio, or the most common growing poultry. The quick growing chicken being the most popular, would give eggs and meat. And, they could be a good source of income as well. Most important they got rid of all food leftovers! GLASS bottles, had a variety of uses. Oil, vinegar, the spirits used for the gas burners and الفنيك the phenic acid used for disenfecting, were kept in bottles. Those bottles were constantly being refilled and reused! Newspapers were used as table cloths, (to this day...) to eat upon. After use they would be scrounged up and possibly used to light a fire... We are a country of the Sun. Our best friend for heating, drying and purifying. In these popular areas it is quite common to see metal trays, or newspapers, on windowsills, with seeds or rice left out to dry. Water melon pips are never thrown. Left to dry and roasted they are ready for اذاذ لب .... ;) (This post, like the ones before, is paving the way, putting you in gear so to speak, to get to our present humongous GARBAGE PROBLEM. So please bear with me) :)
