My Go To Dutch Apple Pie with Oatmeal Streusel Directions Preheat oven to 425 degrees Fit pie crust pastry into pie pan and place in freezer. Apple Filling: 5 cups Granny Smith apples - peeled, cored and sliced I use a mandolin slicer for thin even slices 2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice 1 tablespoon freshly squeezed orange juice ---------- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour 2/3 cup white sugar 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1/4 teaspoon ground allspice ---------- 2 tablespoons butter ---------- Place apples in a large bowl. Add lemon juice and orange juice. Toss to coat the apples. In a separate bowl combine the flour, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice. Mix well; then add to apples. Toss until apples are evenly coated. Remove pie shell from freezer. Place apple mixture in pie shell and dot with butter. Lay a sheet of aluminum foil lightly on top of filling, but do not seal. Bake in preheated oven for 10 minutes. Oatmeal Streusel Topping: 3/4 cup all-purpose flour 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/2 cup packed brown sugar 3/4 cup rolled oats 1 teaspoon lemon zest 1 teaspoon orange zest 1/2 cup butter In a medium bowl thoroughly combine flour, cinnamon, brown sugar, oats, lemon and orange zest. Cut in the butter until mixture is crumbly. Remove pie from oven and sprinkle streusel on top. Reduce heat to 375 degrees. Bake an additional 30 to 35 minutes, until streusel is browned and apples are tender. You can cover the pie loosely with aluminum foil to prevent excess browning – I usually don’t with my oven, but every oven is different. Dont use foil to line the bottom of the oven to catch spills and drips. It will cause food to heat unevenly and, over time, can damage the oven; you’re better off wiping up messes after each use, when the oven has cooled but before the spill has hardened.
