My Japanese Fan... My recent trip to Japan was filled with special moments. One of these special memoirs was on the last afternoon of my stay…Being a most fortunate Man, I found myself in the company of my new friend Yuki and her most charming Mother Yoriko at Kyoto’s Minamiza Kabuki Theatre to enjoy Japan’s most famous actor Tamasaburo Bando, on stage. I noticed the woman seated to my left, wearing a full kimono was fanning herself, using her right hand. I mentioned to my friend that the theatre was rather warm and was told that it was about normal for a Japanese theatre. Not a moment later, I felt a cool breeze and said, “finally the air is on”. My friend Yuki smiled and nodded slightly to the left. The lady to my left was now fanning with her left hand, providing comfort to me as well! As I turned, i noticed that she had a pair of binoculars hanging about her neck…a few more quick words in English, translated to Japanese and the woman passed me the glasses… I looked through them and then passed them to my friend and her Mother. As I was returning them to the owner a few more words were spoken. It turns out they were of no value to aide her eyesight, so she allowed the three of us to use the binoculars during the entire show…What a treat to see the detail on the fabulous costumery as well as the facial expressions of the famous actor…During the third intermission I purchased a small box of lovely little candies with embossed flowers…and as is customary in Japan, they came perfectly wrapped and in cute little bag. After the play ended and the applause waned…I returned the binoculars to the woman on my left and I gave her the small package of candies…as a token of my appreciation…. The Woman gave me this fan and the little case!...Domo rigato gozaimasu! Only in Japan….
