"My Journal": The 1906 Diary of Earl Moses Hodson Tuesday, Sept. 11. – Out of pen points, so am using an odd shaped one for several years a recluse in my pen box. In writing last week I forgot to mention a several delightful hours spent with Wesley Freeman and Mr. (Prof.) Upton. Wesley was visiting at home and hearing of the Institute came down with Mr. Upton. He is doing well. He, too, seems to have changed but little. Old Friend Surprises: If Laurie’s card was a surprise to me last week it was but a little one as a surprise compared to the double one to-day. A gentleman and lady drove up to the school-house this morning. Mr. Tom Miller of Florence (and Oliver) was immediately recognized but it was a few moments before it burst upon me that the lady was formerly Mrs. Bayless. As such I addressed her, apologizing by saying I had heard of her marriage, then followed with much stammering and laughing on the part of all three of us, an explanation that the husband was Mr. Miller! They had been up to Toney and were returning home. They remained until recess closed. Elmer is doing well. My visit with Laurie Saturday was like unto our old boyish days, for at heart – and in actions – we are both boys yet. He went with me out to Mr. Will B.’s picnic. Laurie has his medical degree and may, in a few years, come south to practice. He is the same old “Laurie boy.”
