My Lament for this Thanksgiving Day is not a Lament at all. It’s my Thanksgiving Poem to you all! Have a Wonderful Day. Thanksgiving Day, 2014 Lamont Satterly BILLY BARON, MASTER THIEF Billy Barton loved to eat, He never seemed to stop. One day he ate an apple pie, while running from a cop. He stole that pie from Sister Peg, who made it for her dad. But Billy Barton didn’t care, who’s pie he grabbed to have. He’d eat while climbing up a hill, He’d eat while up a tree, He’d eat whatever he could find, as long as it was Free! The Neighbors knew what Billy did, They shut their windows tight, But Billy Barton, Master Thief, would sneak inside at night. Thanksgiving was his favorite day, When food was everywhere. He knew he’d eat from dawn ‘till dusk, And still have room to spare. Billy Barton, Master Thief, never seemed to mind, If he stole cake or picked a pie, whatever he could find. But then one night, while eating stew and running through the park, Billy fell and bumped his head and everything got dark. When Billy woke, he sat right up since everything was light. “Am I in Heaven?” Billy thought. He marveled at the sight. Everywhere he looked was food, so much to eat he drooled! “I must be dreaming,” Billy said, “To be so easily fooled!” But, Billy Barton, Master Thief, had died and gone above. He walked around the place and said, “I think that I’m in love.” Plates of donuts everywhere, Bacon stacked up high. Cookies, Candy, Crumbs galore, And Piles of pumpkin pie. A sign was hanging in the street, “THANKSGIVING EVERY DAY!” Billy grinned and grabbed some cake, Not knowing what to say. He took a bite, or so he tried, but things weren’t working well, Billy Barton, Master Thief, had ended up in Hell! Food was everywhere he looked, to smell and feel and see, Billy quickly learned the truth, “There’s nothing here for me!” How right he was, he could not bite, His mouth was closed up tight. “No wonder this is Hell,” he thought, “I can’t stay here one night.” But then he noticed down the street, a sign was hanging there. It read, “Sign up today, my friend. We’re going over there!” An arrow pointed to a train, With words across the top, “Bound for earth. The fare is Free. We never make a stop!” So Billy Barton, Master Thief, rode home, or so he thought, When he arrived, he gasped and cried, “What’s this that I have wrought?” In front of him there stood a pen, with Turkeys everywhere. When travelers stepped down off the train, They changed just standing there. Billy saw with his own eyes, People turning brown. Everyone was growing beaks with feathers all around. Billy understood at once, a turkey he would be. Just thinking that scared him so much, he fainted, don’t you see? When Billy woke, it still was night, It wasn’t yet the day. He knew at once that he’d been warned, to change his thieving way. So Billy Barton, Master Thief, became a Master Cook. He went to school, he studied hard, no matter what it took. When he was done, he loved his job. He opened his own shop. He freely gave his apple pie to every single cop. Billy Barton, Master Cook, A turkey would not be. The lesson he had learned that night, had truly set him free. This story has a moral true, “If you don’t live life right, One night a turkey you’ll become, and that would be a sight!” So, share your food ‘cause if you steal On Thanksgiving Day, you’ll BE the meal!
