My Learnings Friday, March 8, 2013 Shree Raghavendra Guru Stotra with Meaning 1a) SRI PURNABODHA GURU TEERTHA PAYOBDHI PARA l KAMARIMAKSHA VISHAMAKSHA SHIRAH SPUSHANTI l PurNabodha. Is one who is full of intellect. Here it refers to Srimadhvacharya, our guru. Thirtha refers to Srimadhvacharyas works which are like ocean (abdhi). Ari. Means enemy. kAmAri. Is the enemy of evil desires. Basically, one who has conquered the evil desires are called learned people. Because of their eye of knowledge (mAksha) they have conquered. They see not just with their actual eyes but with this third eye of knowledge. As a result,We can say they have an unequal or odd ( vi+sama) number of eyes (aKsha). We too by understanding Rayaruss words ( and the works he has left) can improve ourselves, and conquer all the evil desires we have. As said by sri Thrivikramapandithacharya . 1b) PURVOTTARAMITA TARAMGA CARAT SUHAMSA l DEVALI SEVITAPARAMGRI PAYOJA LAGNA ll There are two schools of philosophical thoughts called Purva & uttara mimamsa We can tell that SriRaghavendra is very well versed (amita taramga) in these philosophies (Suhamsa) (as are learned people) and by following his words, they eventually reach paramghri The feet of paramatma, Lord Narayana, whose feet are worshipped by even the devatas, (deVAlisevita) with Milk (payajalagna) 2a) JEEVESHA BHEDA GUNA PURTI JAGATSUSATVA l Sri Raghavendraswamy, being a devotee of srimadhvacharya did a great service to Humanity by taking the concepts in Dvaita siddhanta and explaining it in a way the common man can understand (srimadhvacharya being vayudeva himself writes on a very high, sophisticated level. It takes great scholars like Sri Raghavendraswami to bring it down to a level we can understand) } Some of the tenets in Dvaita siddhanta are JEEVESHABHEDA --- There is a distinction between Paramatma (the supreme soul) and jeevatma (the individual soul) Paramatma is Forever free from samsara, infinite with respect of space, time. He is perfect and contains no flaws (sarvaguna sampUrNaH sarvadosha vivarjithaH ) And the jeevatma (the individual soul) we are bound in this samsara , we need sri Haris grace to achieve Moksha This eternal distinction between jeewa and Paramatma , even after moksha is one characteristic of Dvaita siddhanta. GUNAPURTI -- Paramatma is not bound by the three Gunas of prakruti satva, Rajas & thamas . He possesses qualities like benevolence, infinite knowledge etc. JAGATSUSATVA -- The world is real according to Dviaita siddhanta. It is not merely an illusion. According to satwic, Rajasic, & Thamasic gunas they achieve Salvation according to their fate. 2a) NICA UCCHA BHAAVA MUKHA NAKRAGANAI SAMETHA l 2b) DURVADI AJAPATI GILAIH GURURAGHAVENDRA VAKDEVATHA SARITHAM VIMALI KAROTU ll So these and other tenets are compared in this sloka to NAKRAGANA, groups of Crocodiles which devour the arguments of his opponents, those who making wrong arguments (durvaadi), compared to sheep (Ajapati). Why crocodiles devouring sheep? We see this from Ganganadi perspective --- jivesha bheda: here jiva+ isha means the largest among the living creatures such as elephants. Such large creatures are torn apart bheda By the crocodiles residing in the Ganga river. The crocodiles are jagat su sattva Among the most powerful creatures in the world. The nica uccha bhaava mukha--- means the lower & upper part of their mouth( jaws) These nakra gaNa groups of crocodiles gila swallow even the lead sheep ajaapati Here the du rvadi refers to the terrifying sound that the sheep make while being devoured. It is quite a strong image that the stotra brings acroos. Such is the beauty of the sanskrit language and the skill of the poet, Sri Appanachrya, through the grace of swamigalu. May the words of Sri Raghavendraswamy, like the Ganganadi ,purify us( vimali karotu) . 3a) SRI RAGHAVENDRA SAKALA PRADAATA ! SVAPAADA KANJA DVAYA BHAKTI MADBHYAH !! Sri Raghavendra gives every thing,(to whom?) Those who worship with devotion his two lotus feets. 3b) AGHADRI SAMBHEDANA DRUSHTI VAJRAH I KHAMAA SURENDRO AVATU MAM SADAAYAM Ii Agha is sin -- aghadri is mountain of sins -- Like the way Indras vajra ( thunderbolt) destroys a mountain, a mere glimpse of Sri Raghavendra swami destroys ones sins Here kshama means the earth. Sri Raghavendra swami is like Lord indra on this earth. Sada ayam mam avatu.may he always protect me.( through the grace of NARAYANA) 4) SRI RAGHAVENDRO HARIPADAKANJA NISHEVANAA LLABDHA SAMASTA SAMPAT i DEVASWBHAVO DIVIJADRUMOYAM ISHTAPRADO ME SATATAM SA BHUYAAT II Hari paada kanja --- The lotus feet of sri Hari (The meaning for Hari is one who takes away Our sins.) (Harih harati paapani) Nishevanaat --- by worshipping Labdha samasta sampat ---- obtained all the riches.(devine qualities ) Sri raghavendraswamy worshipped the Lotus feet of SriHari. ( Lord Narayana ),and in doing so he obtained all the riches ( divine qualities ) . Devaswabhaavo --- Divine nature. What is divine nature ? In the Bhagavat Gita, in the beginning of ch 16, the outline of what is devaswbhaava (divine nature ), and aasusi swabhaava (demoniac nature ) is outlined. Abhayamsatvasamshuddih ------- ------------- bhavanthi sampadam daivim abhijatasya bharata II These are the qualities that make one DIVINE NATURE. Sri Raghavendraswamy possesses all these riches. Here it is not material riches that sampat refers to, but richness of character. divijadruma--- divine tree kalpavriksha which gives what ever one desires Ayam ---- he ( Raghavendraswamy) Ishtapradah ----- giving ones desires, Satatam sa bhuyaat ------ may he always be SriRaghavendraswamy ,who is like Kalpavriksha, always gives me, whatever i desire. What should we desire ? We should desire jnana, Bhakti, which will lead us towards GOD, through (Rayaru) But unlike all the material objects we get, knowledge and devotion of God is something we can take with us, something more permanent, which will eventually lead to moksha. 5) Bhavyaswarupo bhava duhkha tula Sanghagni charyah sukha dhairyashaali I SamastadushTagraha nigrahesho Durastyayopaplva sindhusethuh II Bhavyaswarupa--- Sri Rayarus auspicious form Bhavaduhkha. ----- All the sorrows in this samsara we live in, TUlasangha ------ a huge mass of cotton, Agnichayah------- like fire burning. Sri Rayaru is flawless, such as being susceptible to anger, passions etc. as we find in ordinary people. Niravadyaveshah --- veshah means form. Avadya means not praise worthy. There is nir before it. We can notice here the word DATVA is in the 2 nd line.People normally say it with the 3 rd line. But it really goes with all the items preceding it in the first two lines. (that is giving what we need) SANTHANA --- means progeny can also mean expansionso it can mean magnanimity of heart and mind or broad mindedness of intellect. SAMPATH ------ wealth , not just material wealth , but also wealth of knowledge (daivisampath mentioned earlier) PARISHUDDHA BHAKTI ---- Pure devotion towards Rayaru, our guru srivatu deva & towards GOD VIJNANA ----- Vishesha jnana, which frees us from samsara and put us on the right path in life. The padodaka of Sri Rayaru provides punya like the immeasurable Punya that we get from bathing in river Ganga. PUNYASANGHA ---- A large amount of merit ,that is Asankhya---- immeasurable, ANUTTAMA --- unserpassed , AASADITAA ----- which can be obtained, MUKHYAAPAGA -- from bathing & drinking in SURANADI --- Devine river Ganga This paadodaka also, NAASHANAH ---- destroys DUSTAAPATRAYA ---- the three types of miseries, related to Adi daivika, Adi bhaudhika, and Adhyatmika. This sloka talks of the sight of a devotee whose body is adorned all over with the dust from Sri Rayarus feet, A devotee whose mind is attached to the lotus feet of Sri Rayaru, the way a bee is attached to the lotus. Continuing to describe the devotee who : PARIKEERTANA --- recite the praise of PAADAPADMA ------ the lotus feet of. Sri Rayaru, JIRNAVAACHA ------- one who has digested the meaning of them TADDARSHANAM ----- The sight of those devotees of Sri Rayaru, DURITAKAANANA ----- A forest of miseries , DAAVABHUTAM -------- Acts. Like forest fire .by burning our miseries, A mere glimpse of such devotees , who recite the praise of Rayaru, fully understanding the meaning of what they recite, acts like a forest fire to burn the forest of miseries we experience. If seeing the devotee itself can do this then what about actually seeing Sri Rayaru or his brindavan. No doubt to say GREATER. 10) SARVATANTRA SWATANTRO.SAU SRI MADHVA MATAVARDHANAH I VIJAYINDRA KARABJOTTHA SUDHINDRA. May he also bestow upon us the four purusharthas Dharma, Artha, Kama & moksha . As a human being We should strive to be better than animals.Thereare human beings who simply persue material wealth ( artha) .Again a step above them ,there are who follow the path of righteiousness ( Dharma) but is that the ultimate goal of one mans existence.? No,there is an even higher goal-- Moksha, which is each soul experiencing it own innate sukha and is only achievable through continuous devotion towards the Lord. This is the ultimate goal. Does that mean the other three purusharthas are Bad ? No as by the charecterstic of Sri Madhwasiddhantha, there is a Gradation. Kama & Artha are o.k as long as they are in accordance with Dharma( Rightious Means) .While following the path of Dharma we must not think that Dharma is an ultimate goal in and of itself . There are people who are rghtious but do not even give any thought to GOD. But this view is NOT right. It is NARAYANA who enables us to follow the right path in life (Dharma marge prerayati) and as a worship to him (tasya pujartham) ,in all the good deeds that we do.we should remember Him.
